MoneySaver Report: Summer Doorbuster Deals

Attention bargain shoppers, CBS 2 HD has some deals for you.

We are spotlighting the summer sales that have retailers putting their biggest discounts forward to bring shoppers back to spending.

While some folks are soaking up the summer sun, others are taking advantage of some hot summer sales.

"Wherever I see a sign sale," New Yorker Miriam Bieder said.

"Fifteen percent, 25 percent, 50 percent," added Ibbitz Newhall of Bronxville.

"It's marked down and then it's another 50 percent off," said Heather Ross-Wellinstein of Cleveland.

Topping the bargain list is clothing. Now is a great time to stock up on marked down summer items or get a jump on back to school.

And according to Kelli Grant of SmartMoney.com, there are lots of other deals worth checking out, too. For example, if you're looking for a new set of wheels, now is the time to buy.

"We're seeing the 2011s hitting the market and the dealerships are really trying to clear their lots of anything that's left from 2010. It's when automakers are most willing to let you combine incentives so you might get a really good financing deal and cash back," Grant said.

Grant said patio furniture is another big ticket item that is traditionally on sale this time of year. Also, watch for discounts on barbecues, and check out plant nurseries looking to clear inventory on perennials and bulbs.

"Another good purchase to make this time of year is a computer," Grant said.

Manufacturers are aggressively targeting parents of school kids with a variety of enticing deals. Always check online.

And another hot summer buy that's not on sale but worthy of a look is the latest in-demand holiday toy.

"You make all the jokes about Christmas in July, but now is the time you can actually pick up some toys that might be hot later in the season, the Zou Zou Pets which were impossible to find last year," Grant said.

According to retail consultant Tom Julian, July sales have become as important to consumers and retailers as the holiday buying season.

"Shoppers like it because there's a call to action every day whether in the store or online. Whether its the Fourth of July or whether it's back to school, it's a whole new season of shopping," Julian said.

Julian cautions to watch your own bottom line and credit limits, but said take advantage of sales to buy what you need and can afford.

"At the end of the day July is a fantastic time to shop for the home, the family and the indulgent gift," Julian said.

Summer is generally a good time to find deep discounts on air conditioners, too, though in New York City folks might have to wait a bit longer for the sale -- at least until temperatures cool down a bit.
