Dog Days Of Summer Hit New York City

NEW YORK (CBS 2) -- The intense humidity is sitting over New York City in the form of a very visible haze Thursday, with a stickiness factor that falls into the oppressive range.

Mixing in that humidity with already high temperatures, and it feels even hotter than it actually is. At noon in the city it was 91 degrees, but with the humidity - it felt more like a stifling 97 - and New Yorkers are sweating it out.

Mark Emory had to cut short his daily Central Park jog due to the tempertaures.

"It's very bad," he said. "I normally get all the way around the park but I stopped. Couldn't make it all the way."

In fact, it was hotter in New York City Thursday than it was in Mexico.

That's right.

"Normally you can go south for a thrill," said CBS 2 meteorologist John Elliott. "Today, you can go south for a chill."

Working outside on a day like this can be brutal.

CBS 2's Megan Glaros spoke with construction workers pouring cement during the day. An already hot job turned hotter by Mother Nature.

"It's humid, you gotta hydrate yourself," said Edwin Duran, a construction worker from Staten Island. "Drink water, Gatorade. It's good exercise, but in this heat, it's tough."

That's the right idea. Staying hydrated is critical if you'll be spending any amount of time outdoors in these temperatures.

Even people just walking a few blocks to work will want to prepare for the heat.

"I just got out of the shower and then I'm walking a few blocks," said commuter Eric Paff. "And it feels like I'm still wet."

Walk and then hit the subway, and you'll really be feeling it.

"It's unbelievably hot," said straphanger Halli Herzog. "I am miserable right now. It's like really thick, thick heat. Not fun."

A heat advisory remains in effect for New York and New Jersey until 6 p.m. Thursday.
