Con Ed Owns Part Of Ground Zero Mosque Site

NEW YORK (CBS 2) -- The developer behind Park51, an Islamic center and mosque planned near Ground Zero, owns only half the Park Place building where it's to be built. The other half is owned by Con Edison.

Some officials involved in approving plans for the center said they were led to believe SoHo Properties was the only landlord.

Long Island Congressman Peter King said this was another red flag. "If the people who want to build the mosque didn't even tell us that they don't own all the property, how can we expect to believe whatever else they're telling us?"

Con Edison said its lease includes an option to buy, which SoHo properties was exercising.

The Public Service Commission would have to approve the sale.
