Woman Suffers Broken Nose In NYC Burglar Attack

NEW YORK (CBS 2/1010 WINS) -- A burglary suddenly turned violent Tuesday afternoon on the Upper West Side.

A superintendent's wife says she stumbled on a burglar around 4 p.m. as he emerged from the basement of her building on West 81st Street.

The man was wearing a construction vest and told 53-year-old Rosa Arenas that he was checking for leaks.

"I knew that was not true, but still I wasn't afraid of him," Arenas told 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa.

Arenas continued to ask the man questions and when he gave the wrong name of the landlord she began escorting him out. That's when the man attacked.

"He hit me quite a few times, then he knocked me on the floor," Arenas said. "I was so scared and bleeding.  I dragged myself out looking for help."

Arenas suffered a broken nose in the attack.

Detectives said the burglar may have gotten in after pushing a window air conditioner into an apartment.

Arenas hopes that local residents are on the alert and that the man is caught.

"I thought he was going to come to rape me," Arenas said. "I thank God that I'm still alive."
