Fairfield, Toms River Take Aim At LLWS Title

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (CBS 2) -- In Williamsport, Pennsylvania, The Little League World Series is underway once again, with two teams from the Tri-State area in the tournament -- including Fairfield, Conn. and Toms River, N.J.

Right before the team from Fairfield prepared to play their big game, their parents were hoping for a little divine intervention.

"I'm going to say a couple of Hail Mary's, a couple prayers and let's hopefully have a good game," Eddie Magi, Sr. told CBS 2's Christine Sloan.

Those prayers were answered as Fairfield defeated the team from Auburn, Wash. 3-1 in the opening game of the tournament.

Magi's son, Eddie Jr., came on for a one-pitch save after pitcher Nick Nardone was removed because of Little League pitch-count rules.

Nardone went 5 2/3 innings in the win, striking out 10 without walking a hitter.

"This is the most exciting thing I've ever done in my life. I'm nervous for the boys, I know they've worked hard everyday for many, many months to be where they are now..we're all proud of them," Magi Sr. said.

Jack Quinn's family also came out to see him smack a two-run double that broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fifth.

"He's a really good player," Quinn's cousin told Sloan.

"We're so excited...we're so excited for Jack," Quinn's aunt said, "we love it."

Quinn's father, Brian, was especially taken back by seeing his son take the field in Williamsport.

"I remember watching [baseball] with my son on my lap when he was 1-year-old never thinking this would ever happen," Brian Quinn said.

The mother of Patrick Marinacco of the Toms River team -- who will take the field Saturday -- says it's already been an amazing week.

"I am very humbled to be here..it's a great experience, I am in awe of everything around here," Renee Marinacco said.

There are teams from the all over the world at the Little League World Series including from Saudi Arabia, Japan and Germany.
