  • Ken

I did not see Eddie Albert, a decorated Marine, on the list eaither.

  • Daphne Mamalis Dunn

Charles Durning should have been included on that list. He was a very decorated soldier!

  • Wade B

How is Audie Murphy – the most decorated WWII soldier turned actor not on this list?

  • Ben

Sean Connery…why am I not surprised. Only he could pull off James Bond the way he did. Mr. Connery always walks tall and with confidence. I think he might have made James Bond bigger and better than Ian Fleming ever expected James Bond to be.

I would also like to thank everyone famous and not-so-famous for serving in the military.Your dedication and sacrifices will always be remembered and respected.

Hendrix was given a choice between spending two years in prison or joining the Army. Hendrix chose the latter and enlisted on May 31, 1961. After completing boot camp, he was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division and stationed in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His commanding officers and fellow soldiers considered him to be a subpar soldier: he slept while on duty, had little regard for regulations, required constant supervision, and showed no skill as a marksman. For these reasons, his commanding officers submitted a request that Hendrix be discharged from the military after he had served only one year. Hendrix did not object when the opportunity to leave arose. He was NOT “in country”

    • Ben

Wow…I did not know Hendrix’s reasons for being in the military. He was very lazy. After his discharge they should have placed him in prison and added that additional year for wasting the Army’s time and his own.

I might have kept him their and giving him “jobs” that would make him want to improve himself…without placing his fellow soldiers at risk.

  • James

Hendrex served in the 101st Airborn Division, in country (Vietnam), according to Michael Herr’s “Dispatches”. I never heard anything about a discharge.

  • Daniel

What about Alan Alda? 6 months as a gunnery officer in the Army after Korea

  • Cory

Jimi Hendrix?? Really?? Wasn’t he discharged for bad conduct?? How did he make this list??

  • Bruce

don’t forget Charles Durning.. he was a real hero in WWII, wounded twice

    • Bruce

Actually, 3x. He was awarded a Silver Star and 3 Purple Hearts

Sean Connery was in the Royal Navy. There is no scottish Royal Navy (refers to comment The original James Bond served in the Scottish Royal Navy. AP)

    • Ben

Thanks for the reply. I was just speaking in general terms of Mr. Connery serving on a military force. The fact that he served helped him become James Bond. I think it would be harder for a civilian to be as good a Bond as Connery, because Mr. Connery came to the movie studio with some military knowledge. Example: Mr. Connery already knew how to load and shoot a gun before the director yelled “Action!” and before he was picked for the role. The fact that he was a soldier who happened to also be a great actor helped.

  • Scott Bennett

I am very surprised that your list of “Celebs Who Served Their Country” does not include Charles Durning. Mr. Durning was one of 20 soldiers to survive the Malmedy Massacre during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. He was highly decorated for his service during that war.
