90 Percent Of Commuters Want Metro North Bar Cars

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WCBS 880) -- New Haven line commuters on Metro North said in no uncertain terms: 'keep bar cars running on the line.'

Jim Cameron, head of the Connecticut Rail Commuter Council, said 90 percent of the 700 commuters responding to a recent survey said they want bar car service expanded.

"We've done surveys in the past, but we've never had one with this level or response... and I think it really just speaks to the fact that commuters on Metro North want their bar cars," Cameron told WCBS 880's Fran Schneidau.

Cameron said the survey found commuters want nothing fancy. They are looking for cars where they can stand and chat with friends on the trip home, while enjoying an adult beverage.

Cameron said he hopes the solid survey response will convince the Connecticut Department of Transportation that new bars cars should be included when new M8 cars from Japan come into service.

Currently, Metro North has 10 bar cars operating on the New Haven line.
