Rutgers Enrolls Record Number Of Freshmen

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) -- Rutgers University is teeming with a record number of freshmen, up 3 percent from last year.

Classes begin for the 7,300 first-year students on Wednesday. They come from about 100 countries and 39 states. About one-third are from families in which neither parent has a four-year college degree.

There will be about 56,400 undergraduate and graduate students this fall at the main campuses in New Brunswick and Piscataway, and at the smaller campuses in Newark and Camden.

Officials handed out free scarlet T-shirts on Monday. Students will be urged to wear them when the Rutgers football team plays Norfolk State on Thursday night.
