The 34-year-old woman said she was driving Wednesday on Piping Rock Road when she noticed Mejias following her in his car, police said. He then pulled in front of her car and stopped abruptly forcing the woman to step on her brakes.

Police said Mejias got out of his car and walked over to the woman's vehicle screaming and yelling at her. When she drove away police said Mejias continued to follow her.

The woman called police after eluding Mejias.

Police say the former Nassau legislator had been charged with menacing, reckless endangerment and stalking.

Mejias appeared in court Thursday morning after spending the night in jail. Mejias did not speak in court. He was released on $1,000 bail.

The Democratic candidate is challenging incumbent Sen. Kemp Hannon. He was the first Latino elected to the Nassau County Legislature. He served six years.

Mejias' campaign spokesman Akeem Henry did not return a call for comment. But Mejias has canceled a scheduled news conference where was to receive several endorsements.
