Rabies Found In Coyote That Attacked in Rye Brook

RYE BROOK, N.Y. (AP) -- Tests have found rabies in a coyote that was shot by a policeman after a rash of attacks on humans in Rye Brook.

The Westchester County Health Department said Wednesday it was the first confirmation of rabies in a coyote in the county.

The female that was killed Monday by a policeman in Rye Brook was believed to be the same animal that attacked a toddler, her father and a teenager on Sunday.

The bite victims were treated for rabies, which can be spread to humans in an animal's saliva and is fatal if untreated.

In June, two children were attacked by coyotes in neighboring Rye. Experts said those coyotes did not appear to be rabid.
