L.I. Police Looking For Machete Wielding Robbery Suspects

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Police on Long Island are on the hunt for a group of men terrorizing residents with a machete.

Authorities told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall that the suspects have been using a machete to threaten and rob residents walking on the sidewalks of Hempstead.

Nassau County Police Sgt. John Giambrone described the crimes to WCBS 880.

"It's anywhere from two subjects to four subjects -- they are surrounding the victims, they're demanding all the proceeds that the victims have on them," Giambrone said.

The sergeant said so far, one man and two women have been robbed of their cash and cell phones.

"Obviously anytime you use a weapon during the course of a robbery whether it's a knife, a machete, or a handgun, the potential of something bad happening is pretty realistic."

Authorities said no one was injured in any of the incidents.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers, at 800-244-8477. All calls will remain confidential.
