Mechanical Problem On N.Y.-Bound JetBlue Flight

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- A New York-bound Jet Blue flight landed safely at a South Florida airport after the pilot reported smelling smoke in the airplane.
   
Jet Blue flight 578 took off from the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport at 8:15 a.m. Friday. Airport spokesman Greg Meyer says about 10 minutes after takeoff, the pilot reported a mechanical problem with the aircraft.
   
Jet Blue spokeswoman Sharon Jones says the pilot smelled smoke in the cabin and decided to return to the airport as a precaution.
   
The plane landed at the airport without incident and is being inspected by maintenance crews.
   
The flight had been bound for White Plains, N.Y., with 78 passengers and crew on board. The passengers were transferred to another plane .
