L.I. Man Opens Fire On Cars During Rush Hour

SMITHTOWN, NY (WCBS 880) - Police say two cars were shot, their windshields shattered, after a man inside an apartment in the West Main Street area of Smithtown started aiming at traffic and opened fire during the height of the evening rush hour on Tuesday.

Authorities tell WCBS 880 Long Island reporter Sophia Hall that there were two women inside one of the vehicles. Thankfully, they were not injured.

The Suffolk County Police Department says the weapon used was a pellet gun.

The shooter, identified as 24-year-old Curtis Windheim of Farmingville, was arrested.

Detectives say that they found a 20-month-old child and several weapons in his apartment.

Windheim was taken to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center of Smithtown for evaluation. He faces charges of reckless endangerment in the 1st degree, two counts of criminal mischief in the 4th Degree, and resisting arrest.
