Grieving N.J. Family Facing Another Loss

OAKLAND, NJ (WCBS 880) – Buddy, Hally, Cooper, Bear, Blue, Lucky, and Sasha are loved, well cared for, and not a neighborhood nuisance. but there are seven of them.

In Oakland, residents are allowed just four dogs.

LISTEN: WCBS 880’s Sean Adams reports

Lori Brown would rather move than break up her family, but she can’t find someone to buy her house.

Fines start on September 24.

“I think it is ridiculous, because you can have a bad dog owner with one dog,” Brown told WCBS 880 reporter Sean Adams. “I have seven and my neighbors didn’t even know I had seven.”

The Borough Council has granted reprieves due to personal circumstances.

The Browns lost a daughter this summer and a son-in-law has a crippling leg injury.

But, the ordinance stands. Fines could be $100 per day, per extra dog.

This family not only knew the law when they got caught, they tried to lie and say they were dog sitting when in fact they didnt even have the animals registered properly. Now they play the “poor me” card and expect everyone to change laws because they have a household full of illegal animals. The law is the law and if they didn;t know, I would say bend the rules, but knowingly and willingly breaking the law causes you to pay the price……. and i have seen tons of peole willing to take a few of the dogs so they could stay inclusing people living on the same street so start paying the fines…………………….. Fedup – you are welcome to leave.
NYConservative – you bring up a valid point. It would make some sense to grandfather the dogs if the ordinance was inacted after they ouwed the dogs. If the ordinance existed before thet acquired the ‘extra’ dogs, well that’s there problem.

  • NYConservative

Did she have the 7 BEFORE the ordinance went into effect? Or, did she ignore the ordinance? There is a huge difference. If she ignored it then she is the one who brought the trouble to her front door.

When can one man or woman tell another how to live their life? This is supposed to be a free country with the Right to do what you want as long as you don’t interfere with the Life, Liberty, and Property of another. Who gave those in a governmental job the authority to interfere with the Life of the Browns. They have every Right to have as many dogs, cats, etc. as long as they do not interfere with the Life of another. The criminals here are those who are forcing their will on the Browns. They are the ones that should be jailed.
