Muslim Groups Hold Summit Over NYC Islamic Center

NEW YORK (AP) — A proposed Islamic center near ground zero is slowly being embraced by some Muslims who initially were indifferent about the plan, partly in response to a sense that their faith is under attack.

A summit of U.S. Muslim organizations is under way in New York City to address controversies over a proposed Islamic center near ground zero.

A spokesman says the Muslim leaders have been meeting all day Sunday in an effort to arrive at a united stand on the proposed Islamic center.

It has yet to be seen whether the groups will emerge with a firm stand on the proposed community center, dubbed Park51. The primary purpose of the meeting is to talk about ways to combat religious bigotry.

But Shaik Ubaid of the Islamic Leadership Council of Metropolitan New York, one of the groups organizing the gathering, said he has a growing sense that some American Muslims who initially had trepidation are now throwing their support behind the plan.

“Once it became a rallying cry for extremists, we had no choice but to stand with Feisal Rauf,” he said, referring to the New York City imam who has been leading the drive for the center.

Groups scheduled to participate in the summit include the Islamic Society of North America, the Islamic Circle of North America, the Muslim Alliance of North America and the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

Gauging support for the center among U.S. Muslims is difficult. As a group, they are diverse, ranging from blacks who found the faith during the civil rights movement to recent immigrants hailing from opposite ends of the globe. They rarely speak with one voice.

Yet after a pastor in Florida injected himself into the debate by threatening to burn copies of the Quran, U.S. Muslims stirred.

“I think most Muslims outside New York City are more concerned about the backlash than the actual center, which most of them will never directly benefit from,” said Shahed Amanullah, the editor-in-chief of the website and a group of other Islam-themed sites.

“Grass-roots support is indeed building,” he said, “but that is probably more due to the pushback against the general hostile climate.”

The center’s proposed location two blocks from the World Trade Center site has upset some relatives of Sept. 11 victims and led to angry demands that it be moved. Critics say the site of mass murder by Islamic extremists is no place for an Islamic institution.

Rauf has called for the 13-story Islamic center to be open to people of all faiths, while his co-leader of the project, Manhattan real estate developer Sharif El-Gamal, has stressed its non-religious aspects, which include a health club and culinary school.

The summit comes as some supporters of the center have encouraged its organizers to include prayer space for Jews, Christians and other religious groups as a way of countering critics who say it will be a monument to Islamic supremacy.

Julie Menin, the chairwoman of the Manhattan community board that endorsed the project months ago, said she will meet with Rauf to discuss the interfaith possibility in the coming weeks.

“They had always talked about giving the center an interfaith concept,” she said, “like having classes in Buddhism.”

“It’s one thing to have panel discussions, but if you really want to bring these factions together … have a nondenominational interfaith space, like the chapel at the Pentagon, where local rabbis and priests could hold services on different days of the week.”

There has always been some interfaith support for the center.

Its backers modeled their concept for the center after the city’s two popular Jewish community centers and consulted at length with the managers to learn how to make their model work downtown, and reached out to some neighborhood politicians for support.

There was much less outreach to Muslims, Ubaid said.

Rauf, he said, may have been a regular talking head for the national news media on Muslim world affairs, but among New York City imams he was something of an outsider, Ubaid said.

“He was not that involved with the local Muslim community,” Ubaid said. He said that included a general failure to round up support for the center before going public with his plans. “Had we consulted us, we probably would have told him, gently, no.”

Even after the proposal became public, there was a hesitation by some Muslim groups to quickly endorse the idea, in part because of questions about its feasibility.

Questions about the project’s finances have lingered. The investment partnership that owns the property, led by El-Gamal, quickly fell more than $224,000 behind on its property taxes this summer.

The city’s finance department confirmed Friday that El-Gamal had begun resolving that debt Wednesday, turning over a check for a little more than $35,000 and signing on to an eight-installment payment plan to pay the rest.

El-Gamal said in a statement that the failure to pay was due to a dispute with the city over the assessed value of the property — an appeal that is still pending.

I support this project but not because I am Muslim. I believe the city of NY could well use the $100 million injection into the local economy and that Muslim and non-Muslim residents can benefit from the central location and opportunity to interact and learn from one another as well as share resources like literature, arts, culture and physical activities.

@nana, I don’t really understand where this whole “Muslims are trying to takeover” mentality has come from. This is like in the movie “The Expendables” where Stallone and his crew are mistaken as being a part of Eric Roberts’ evil Americans that want to takeover the Island of Vilena. The soldiers of Vilena confuse Stallone & Co. (who are good guys) with being “The American Disease” and start shooting at them. An attribution error that the audience is supposed to find absolutely outrageous. I’d say take a step back and see how an outlandish statement like “You will not conquer America” is equally crazy. If anyone is in a position to take over America, it’s the Chinese. If they ever decide to call in all of the American debt they own, this country will go into foreclosure.

@Dan Te – No less than the 7th (without hyperbole) time that you have used the same diatribe of facts. If you’ve copied your rant from someone else, you need to find a new source of material and if you’ve composed it on your own, you need to come up with further elucidating data to give your repetitive argument some credibility. As it stands, it sounds like you might have just ripped off your argument from Stormfront[dot]org. However in the spirit of repetition, I will counter with NO RELIGION IS BETTER THAN ANOTHER. (Christianity, Islam, Judaism, etc.) Human attrocities have been carried out or legitimized in the name of most major faiths – of which the honor of “most bloodshed” goes to Christianity. In these campaigns, Christians have claimed the lives of more Muslims than vice versa.

    Christian-European Crusades
    approx. 176,000 Muslims killed

    Transatlantic Slave Trade
approx. 10,000,000 Africans enslaved while teachings from the bible were the principle justification. (at least 10% of these Africans are believed to have been Muslim whereas 90% probably practiced African tribal religions)

    Zanzibar Revolution
Christian John Okello and his revolutionaries slaughtered up to 20,000 primarily Muslim people.

Slaughter of 300,000 Bosnian Muslims and rape of 100,000 Bosnian Muslim women by Christian Serbs

    Rwandan Genocide
Conflict between Christian Tutsi and Muslim Hutu

This is not meant to be pro-Islam and con-Christianity. The point is that EVERY conflict has two sides and that historically and sadly, most wars have claimed more innocents (regardless of religion) than combatants. No religion can be one of peace or brotherhood, and none is without sin when INDIVIDUALS warp the logic to suit their own sick fantasies. So you can denigrate Islam by calling all of its followers “mus-lime” all you want, but it only makes you and your argument appear less intelligent and non-cogent.

The really sad thing here is that there are many Muslims in this country that just want to practice their religion and their culture freely, to co-exist with their fellow man, woman and child and to even pay their taxes. They can’t, because of this “American” [general term] proclivity to fear and hate a culture and community that one does not understand.

You mu-slimes really are totally devoid of facts and truth aren’t you? If you can’t distort a truth, it’s not worth following, is that it?

Here’s some facts for your “versions” of truths:

The Crusades was a war because mu-slimes had invaded Western lands. You mu-slimes didn’t want to be killed, stop killing others first. (I know this is a hard concept for you camel turds.)

The Transatlantic Slave Trade was primarily provided by you mu-slimes in Africa who enslave each other as a matter of course. And you still trade slaves to this day.

As to Bosnia and Rowanda, well, what did you expect after you had injected your Moors genes into that region after you had invaded it back during the Middle Ages? They’re all as stupid as the rest of you mu-slimes.

But don’t worry. We understand: it’s Genetic. You can’t help it. And like any other murderous diseases that can’t help but kill, we understand. But don’t get mad if we humans don’t like being killed.

      Islam, it’s a disease.

Well, of course their faith is under attack…it’s just as bad as the Nazis!!!! If you think the Muslim religion is peaceful, you know nothing of it. Spend a few months in Iran like I have and you will quickly see how horrible they are. The Nazis were once tolerated because they were a minority and seen as relatively “peaceful” and “harmless”…their numbers quickly grew and they rose to power before anyone realized what had really happened. It starts with small things here and their, like this. America needs to wake up and realize these ways cannot peacefully co-exist with American Democracy and Freedom…there has to be limitations, otherwise they will walk all over you.

Peter: Why in the world would you spend a second in Iran? Oh.. I know… maybe you were looking for tips on how to destroy American democracy and freedom as you claim we need to put limits on. This is what muhammad him self said about Quran and Muslims-
I find this quotation in a book in bangla the name of this book is “Islam Prasang” compiled by-Md,Khalilar Rahaman, publisd in1984, by Satsang Publishing House. India. It is a conversation between Sri Anukul Thakur (a hindu saint) and Md Khalilur Rahaman a Muslim scholar, which take place between 1925 to1945.(page-188, in hindi transltion))
“It is mentioned in Hadis, Hazrat Rasul (The Prophat) had once said – The day is not far when such a period would come for the mankind when existence of Islam Would only be in its name. The Koran would reduce
into a symbol only .All the mosques would turn into mere corridors and their guidance would be destroyed ,their learned people would turn into wretched creatures among the civilized world under sky.Their would be visible hostility against religion among them and there would also be its reaction over them.”
This is true translation, i think mullahs hide it form ordinary show the future of islam and will give some relief to whole human beings who fear about spreading Islam, but it also warns us about coming danger. Please tell about this to everyone you know, and also find out where it is in Hadis.

Coming to YOUR Nation: Muslims Forcibly Take Over French Street for Prayers

    -By Warner Todd Huston

One of the more insidious ways that Muslims try to impose their sharia laws on western nations is to use the west’s liberal laws against them by warping that law to install sharia by stealth. Such is the case in a section of France where Muslims, sometimes appearing in the hundreds, choke a French street to perform their daily prayers. They have no permits, they have not asked for legal permission, they simply congregate by the hundreds and do it, breaking the law as they do so.

Sadly, the French government has told the police to stand idly by and allow it to happen showing that France is being pulled both ways on Islam.

On one hand they are strictly a secular government even going so far as to make religious expression uncomfortable — especially for Christians. France has banned the veil and many Frenchmen have spoken out against radical Islam.

Yet on the other hand there are great swaths of France that naturally born Europeans cannot go as these sections have been cordoned off by invading immigrant Muslims. Even French police won’t dare enter some of these towns and housing complexes for fear of their lives.

This street activism is yet another example of this arrogant, illegal activity by Muslims who are attempting nothing less than a physical take over of France. These Muslims intend to conquer and change France, not join her to become French citizens and accept her as she is.

These Muslims are acting against French law. Not only that but they are acting against all of the west’s tolerance for religion and respect for individuals by choking off the flow of business and transportation as well as the freedom of movement of French citizens while these scofflaws jam the streets to perform their prayers.

Muslims are showing their intolerance of all of France’s citizens by interfering in such a gauche manner. But this is a show of force, an example of Islam being imposed by force on France.

Make no mistake, America. This is the same underhanded actions that Muslims intend to continue to impose on the United States. This Ground Zero mega mosque is only the latest example. They will take victory by any means and they expect to convert us or destroy us.

Imam Faisal Abdul Rauf Tells Jordanian Newspaper he is for Sharia Law
    September 14, 2010
    By admin
I continually see the media calling the Imam of the proposed Ground Zero Mosque a “moderate”. But the truth is that no Muslim who supports Sharia is a moderate, because Sharia calls for the domination of non-Muslims. Here is what the Imam had to say about Sharia to the Jordanian newspaper al-Ghad.

Hat tip to Ryan, with some help from the Desert Queen.

    Here it is in Arabic.

Here is the paragraph translated to English.

“People asked me right after the 9/11 attacks as to why do movements with political agendas carry [Islamic] religious names? Why call it ‘Muslim Brotherhood’ or ‘Hezbollah (Party of Allah)’ or ‘Hamas’ or ‘Islamic Resistance Movement’? I answer them this — that the trend towards Islamic law and justice begins in religious movements, because secularism has failed to deliver what the Muslim wants, which is life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. . . .The only law that the Muslim needs exists already in the Koran and the Hadith.” A state based on the Koran and Hadith could only be called a theocracy

Why Did Cordoba Project Change It’s Name To Park 51, When It’s Address is 45 47 Park?

Posted on 15 September 2010 03:19:50 by CharlesMartelsGhost

Good question, huh? I’ve wondered about this for awhile.

Cordoba House changed its name to Park 51 which is odd since the address of the location is 45 47 Park Place.

Look to the Koran-the book of islamic conquest Qur’an CHAPTER 51, Verses 45-47 explains all:

51:45 And they were unable to arise, nor could they defend themselves. 51:46 And [We destroyed] the people of Noah before; indeed, they were a people defiantly disobedient. 51:47 And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander.

The numbered Qur’an verses celebrating the Muslim conquests match up to the Park 51: 45-46-47 address.

Also consider this Sept. 10th NYPost article, by Amir Taheri:

Islam center’s eerie echo of ancient terror Should there be a mosque near Ground Zero? In fact, what is pro posed is not a mosque — nor even an “Islamic cultural center.”

In Islam, every structure linked to the faith and its rituals has a precise function and character. A mosque is a one-story gallery built around an atrium with a mihrab (a niche pointing to Mecca) and one, or in the case of Shiites two, minarets.

Other Islamic structures, such as harams, zawiyyahs, husseinyiahs and takiyahs, also obey strict architectural rules. Yet the building used for spreading the faith is known as Dar al-Tabligh, or House of Proselytizing.

The Ground Zero project doesn’t fit the traditional minaret. This 13-story [fifteen story if you include subgrade levels] multifunctional structure couldn’t be any of the above.

The groups fighting for the project know this; this is why they sometimes call it an Islamic cultural center. But there is no such thing as an Islamic culture. Islam is a religion, not a culture. Each of the 57 Muslim-majority nations has its own distinct culture — and the Bengali culture has little in common with the Nigerian. Then, too, most of those countries have their own cultural offices in the US, especially in New York. Islam is an ingredient in dozens of cultures, not a culture on its own.

In theory, at least, the culture of American Muslims should be American. Of course, this being America, each ethnic community has its distinct cultural memories — the Iranians in Los Angeles are different from the Arabs in Dearborn.

In fact, the proposed structure is known in Islamic history as a rabat — literally a connector. The first rabat appeared at the time of the Prophet.

The Prophet imposed his rule on parts of Arabia through a series of ghazvas, or razzias (the origin of the English word “raid”). The ghazva was designed to terrorize the infidels, convince them that their civilization was doomed and force them to submit to Islamic rule. Those who participated in the ghazva were known as the ghazis, or raiders. After each ghazva, the Prophet ordered the creation of a rabat — or a point of contact at the heart of the infidel territory raided.

The rabat consisted of an area for prayer, a section for the raiders to eat and rest and facilities to train and prepare for future razzias. Later Muslim rulers used the tactic of ghazva to conquer territory in the Persian and Byzantine empires. After each raid, they built a rabat to prepare for the next razzia.

It is no coincidence that Islamists routinely use the term ghazva to describe the 9/11 attacks against New York and Washington. The terrorists who carried out the attack are referred to as ghazis or shahids (martyrs). Thus, building a rabat close to Ground Zero would be in accordance with a tradition started by the Prophet. To all those who believe and hope that the 9/11 ghazva would lead to the destruction of the American “Great Satan,” this would be of great symbolic value.

Faced with the anger of New Yorkers, the promoters of the project have started calling it the Cordoba House, echoing President Obama’s assertion that it would be used to propagate “moderate” Islam.

The argument is that Cordoba, in southern Spain, was a city where followers of Islam, Christianity and Judaism lived together in peace and produced literature and philosophy.

In fact, Cordoba’s history is full of stories of oppression and massacre, prompted by religious fanaticism. It is true that the Muslim rulers of Cordoba didn’t force their Christian and Jewish subjects to accept Islam. However, non-Muslims could keep their faith and enjoy state protection only as dhimmis (bonded ones) by paying a poll tax in a system of religious apartheid.

If whatever peace and harmony that is supposed to have existed in Cordoba were the fruit of “Muslim rule,” the subtext is that the United States would enjoy similar peace and harmony under Islamic rule.

A rabat in the heart of Manhattan would be of great symbolic value to those who want a high-profile, “in your face” projection of Islam in the infidel West. This thirst for visibility is translated into increasingly provocative forms of hijab, notably the niqab (mask) and the burqa. The same quest mobilized hundreds of Muslims in Paris the other day to close a whole street so that they could have a Ramadan prayer in the middle of the rush hour.

One of those taking part in the demonstration told French radio that the aim was to “show we are here.” “You used to be in our capitals for centuries,” he said. “Now, it is our turn to be in the heart of your cities.”

Before deciding whether to support or oppose the “Cordoba” project, New Yorkers should consider what it is that they would be buying.
