Officials: Burns Killed Elderly Man On S.I.
NEW YORK (CBS 2) -- Fire officials said an elderly man died from burns sustained in a Staten Island house fire.
Investigators said 68-year-old Joseph Abdo was killed by the early-morning fire in Emerson Hill. The fire reportedly began inside his custom-designed room.
"In the rear of the building where the main body of the fire was we found a male, 68-years-old, who succumbed to his burn injuries," said Deputy Chief William Tanzosh of the FDNY.
Published reports said Abdo lived with multiple sclerosis, and that his 64-year-old wife Margaret jumped to safety from the second floor of the house.
She was hospitalized for burns and smoke inhalation.
There was no word on what sparked the Saturday fire.
