NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A fast, powerful storm blew through the tri-state area Wednesday night.
No other systems were behind it, but severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for parts of the city — including Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island — and northern and central New Jersey, which expired around 9:30 p.m.
A severe thunderstorm watch that was originally set to expire at 11 p.m., but was later canceled.
Sandy Klein of 1010 WINS’ said she was “a little creeped out” by the sudden burst of rain in Teaneck, N.J.
“It was coming down in buckets, I couldn’t see two feet in front of me,” Klein said. “It seemed to come out of nowhere.”
Klein said the neighborhood was blindsided by the torrential downpours and fierce wind gusts.
“I was coming up the block. I couldn’t get very far, when this huge tree just fell in front of me,” Klein said.
A number of unconfirmed instances of storm damage were reported in New Jersey. In Bergen, there was a report of a house struck by lightning along with downed wires and trees.
The storm is also responsible for power outages. JCP&L said about 16,000 customers were without power as of 10 p.m. Wednesday night. The hardest hit counties include Warren, Morris and Monmouth counties.
Con-Edison reported 148 customers without power in Brooklyn and 221 in Queens with scattered outages across the other boroughs.
AccuWeather said the showers and thunderstorms would be moving east and out of the region before clearing up overnight with areas of fog outside the city.
