LIRR Signal Modernization Means Weekend Headaches

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) - It's short-term pain for long-term gain, says Long Island Rail Road spokesman Sam Zambuto.

"We are bringing state of the art, computerized, microprocessing technology to a critical switching area in Jamaica," Zambuto told WCBS 880 reporter Marla Diamond.

That is where, last month, the signalling system caught fire and nearly knocked out the whole LIRR network.

It also left Sam from Syosset stranded.

"It was a mess," said Sam. "I'd like to see it [the system] upgraded, you know, as soon as possible and if it means a delay next week, it's acceptable."

The work will be done October 23 and 24 and November 6 and 7, which happens to be the weekend of the New York City Marathon.
