Valley Stream attack recorded on cab driver’s cell phone camera.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Nassau County Police are thanking a quick thinking cab driver who they said helped catch two men accused of a brutal beating and robbery on Long Island.

Christian Cruz of Lynbrook and Steven Wilhemsen of East Rockway were arrested and are accused in an attack on a 30-year-old man trying to catch a cab to get home at the Valley Stream Long Island Rail Road station Tuesday night, WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall reports.

The victim was allegedly jumped, beaten and robbed of $40 by Wilhemsen and Cruz, 1010 WINS’ Mona Rivera reported

Cab driver Jean Cadet recorded the pictures on his cell phone after the victim was set upon by the suspects. Dispatcher Kathryn Lahn called 911.

WARNING: Video contains disturbing images of violence and language

“I was afraid because you don’t know what these kids are going to do nowadays,” Lahn said.

Nassau County Police Sgt. Kenneth Catalini said the cabbie’s reaction was “very timely” and that the video “helped seal this case.”

CBS 2’s Jennifer McLogan spoke with the manager of Valley Stream Taxi, Eric Morgenstern, who said it was a “good idea” for Cadet to “keep that cell phone video going.”

“Anytime anyone sees anything, put that cell phone on – it saves lives,” Morgenstern said.

The two suspects have pleaded not guilty.  The victim remains in the hospital.

Unfortunately, this is what heppens when thugs know its illegal for citizens to protect themselves by being armed.

    I dont call 911

  • Kurt

I hope those two punks get prison time for this and are raped. Then they will know what it is like to be a victim.

    Thugs deserve death

The police may may possibly charge the cab driver with illegal wiretapping since he apparently didn’t get permission from the two individuals beating and robbing the victim.

In Texas this would never have happened. Some citizen would shot these thugs and then received a medal from the mayor…New York in a cesspool

  • CaliMan

Ahh yes, more uppity ghetto turds acting “gansta.” Pathetic losers. Should be a hunting season for ghetto rats. Would be fun.

  • Hank

Freekin monkeys. How anyone lives in that cesspool of a state is beyond me.

  • yomammy

    This is all Obama’s fault!!

    • Bill Birtizman

      You damn right it is!

      • Husein Barak

        No, No NO!…It’s all Bush’s fault, remember…

  • Dutra

Say it. Come on and say it! Scream it out loud!! Black on white! Hate crime.

    • KPMc

Did you even watch the video??

There is apparently an Hispanic kid and a lumpy, fat disgusting white turd who should put his shirt on in public.

The only black person is the cabbie that video taped it.

    • Whitey

How can black on white be a hate crime? Jesse Jackson has proven that only white people can be racists. It follows therefore that only white people can commit racial hate crimes. Ipso facto, nowattameen?

  • Richard_G

What if it turned out that the attackers were undercover cops? Would he still be a hero or under arrest? At the time of the attack, how could he have known for sure?

  • Malcome X

We need many Bernard Goetz’s to dispatch these thugs!

  • billy

funny how cops love cell cameras when they help them catch criminals but hate them when they are used to defend yourself from lawbreaking cops….

  • tham

send them to Afghanistan with NO weapons. Let these neanderthals check for roadside bombs or just dump them in the landfill since they are obviously garbage.

    • gladi’mouttathere

      Right on tham!

    • Michael S.

      Don’t insult the Neanderthals.

  • Bill G.

Yes, in many states it is a felony to film/record a police officer without consent. A public official, performing official duties in public, is having a private conversation and cannot be filmed/recorded without consent.
Your privately owned vehicle, found in a public location by a police officer, can have a tracking unit attached without a warrant.
You do not have the right to privacy for your vehicle when it is in a public location.
The public official, performing official duties, does.
    Isn’t big government wonderful?

    • Noncompliance

No, it’s not illegal. Thay just want you to think it is.

    • Joe

You don’t have a right to privacy for your vehicle if it’s parked in your driveway!! Did you see that recent ruling?

  • gladi’mouttathere

That’s right…just stand around and watch! What a bunch of spineless idiots East Coasters are! I should know…I was born and raised in Jersey. That’s why I don’t live anywhere near there! And I live in a concealed carry state..when will the East Coast wake up!

    • jd

      NEVER!

    • B

Amen…conceal and carry is the way. “when we outlaw guns…only outlaws will have guns”. I live in a state that just doesn’t get it. They banned hand guns in the city…that did nothing except give the ignorant, no pride, self hating thugs the motive to rob, beat and kill anyone they please because they know the citizens WHO ACTUALLY PAY TAXES cant carry guns.

      • Johnny Johnson

        Always carry. Never tell.

    • KPMc

Glad your out of here too.

    • Big Ed

Hey, not “east coast” pal…you mean the North East lib elitists…I live in a concealed carry state too, Florida. We also have the “stand your ground” doctrine. We’re taking out the thugs one by one and then calling 911.
My little Kimber .45 takes seconds when the cops are minutes away….We don’t play.

      • Big John

        Big Ed,
        absolutely right.
When seconds count the police are only minutes away.
        Sig 9mm.

      • Shiv

Got to love the castle doctrine we have in FLA! And if they enter the house unlawfully, how do you guys in NJ say it – fugetaboutit! Blast away.

      • Mike-N-TN

I have a Kimber .45 also. Sweet piece!

    • James

I jump in and help all the time. I live in Boston.

  • DIVERSITY IS OUR STRENGTH!

    Diversity is our STRENGTH!!!!

And the check is in the mail.

  • julio

yeah, leave that cell phone cam on, unless you’re recording police brutality. THEN it’s a felony. Very clear.

    • bb king

actually not. read the recent d.c. decision that states you can video/audio record a traffic stop or police in public because there is no expectation of privacy.

      • Scott

Ah, some states have wiretapping laws that make it illegal to record if both parties dont consent and that is why people are getting into hot water videoing traffic stops and the like. The cops obviously wont consent after the fact if they just beat you or your spouse/friend/whatever up.

      • Joe

Maybe in D.C., but not in the states. (D.C. isn’t a state)

    • James

That case was thrown out by the court. The charges against the motorist were dropped!! Yeh!!

    • Thomas

no it’s not a felony to record police officers in action. You actually have more rights to film law enforcement officials than regular citizens. They’ll TELL you it’s illegal, but they’re just lying and breaking the law themselves

      • Joe

Again, do your research. This is a highly contested issue, and it differs from state to state.

    • dmorris

What a bunch of idiots you two are. What would you do? Probalbly sit there and watch because it was a white guy right? Sickening
