Police Dept. Mergers Hot Topic In Westchester

OSSINING, NY (WCBS 880) - Everyone wants to save money, but which police departments should merge is causing a fight in northern Westchester County.

LISTEN: WCBS 880's Catherine Cioffi reports

A move to merge the Town of Ossining's police department with the Westchester County Police Department has some officials in Briarcliff a little insulted.

Briarcliff Village Manager Phillip Zegarelli says there was a study underway to look at merging the town of Ossining police department with the police departments in the village of Ossining and Briarcliff, but the county police option announcement was made.

"Yeah. We felt we... had literally had our legs cut out from under us," Zegarelli tells WCBS 880 reporter Catherine Cioffi.

He says they're just looking to do the best thing for taxpayers.

Zegarelli says, "We are keeping our own police department. Could we do things better? Can we do things more efficiently? Yes."

Meanwhile, in Ossining, town officials say they are not starting a fight with Briarcliff.
