NYPD: Young Boy Struck And Killed By City Bus

NEW YORK (AP/1010 WINS) -- A 4-year-old boy is dead and his mother is in critical condition after both were struck by a New York City bus in Brooklyn.

Police say they believe the boy ran out into the street Thursday afternoon in the Manhattan Beach neighborhood. They say his 45-year-old mother threw herself into traffic in an attempt to save him.

"I heard screaming and screaming and screaming.  I didn't know what the screaming was," one area resident told 1010 WINS' Al Jones.

"A little kid on the floor in a pile of blood, not moving at all.  Probably the worst thing you can ever see," Brandon Ditcheck said, describing the scene of the accident.

Police say the boy was pronounced dead shortly after the incident at Coney Island Hospital. His mother remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

The bus driver was not cited, Jones reported.
