Cops: NYer Shoots, Wounds Lover's Son, Kills Self

MEDFORD, N.Y. (AP) -- Police say a man shot and critically wounded his lover's 27-year-old son before killing himself at their home on New York's Long Island.

Daniel Guevara was in critical condition at Stony Brook University Medical Center after he was shot by 66-year-old Charles Kennedy at their Medford home Sunday.

Police say Kennedy had recently returned to the Rustic Avenue home he shared with Guevara's mother from a hospital, where he underwent alcohol-related treatment.

Detective Lt. Gerard Pelkofsky tells Newsday that Guevara's mother told Kennedy she didn't want him living with them anymore.

Pelkofsky says Kennedy then retrieved a handgun from a safe and shot Guevara once in the chest.

Kennedy then shot himself. He was pronounced dead at the red shingle-and-brick home.
