NEW YORK (CBS 2) – One suspect remained at large Sunday in last week’s horrific hate crime attack in the Bronx.

Police were still searching for 23-year-old Rudy Vargas Perez, who had been expected to turn himself in Saturday but didn’t. So far, eight men were under arrest, ranging in age from 16 to 23. All were members of the Latin King Goonies and all charged in a sadistic spree of violence against two teens and a man all because they were gay.

The police commissioner said the first seven under arrest have shown no remorse. “The seven individuals that we have in custody initially, there’s an eighth one now, have made statements, video confessions or statements concerning their acts involving this case, but I wouldn’t characterize it as remorse,” Ray Kelly said.

Police said last weekend the gang members brought three men to a house on Osbourne Place where they were savagely sodomized, burned and beaten for having a homosexual relationship.

Members of community groups led by city council speaker Christine Quinn marched through this University Heights neighborhood handing out flyers to spread awareness about this brutal anti-gay bias crime.

“You don’t attack someone because of who they are unless you are an ignorant coward,” said City Council Speaker Christine Quinn.

“You are attacking the right to be an American. You are attacking the right of freedom of speech and expression,” Gov. Paterson said.

Archbishop Timothy Dolan talked about this bias crime during a visit to Cardinal Spellman high school. “Human life is sacred and whenever anywhere, anyhow, anyway the dignity of the human person is trampled upon, beaten up. It’s awful. It causes us all to shudder and say ‘this is not the way things are meant to be’.”

Last night dozens gathered in the West Village to “take back the night against criminals targeting the gay community.

Mayor Bloomberg has these words of warning: Bloomberg: “Let me be clear to anyone who would contemplate targeting a fellow New Yorker like this: the greatest police department in the world will find you swiftly. You will be prosecuted to the full extent under the law, and you will go to jail for a very long time.”
