2 Dead In New Haven Car Crash

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) -- Police say two people have died in a violent early morning car crash in New Haven, and speed and wet road conditions may have been factors.

Authorities say an officer on patrol saw the Mercedes Benz apparently speeding on Webster Street at about 1:30 a.m. on Friday and turned around to pull the vehicle over. Seconds later he came upon the crash scene in which the car had wrapped itself around a tree.

Both occupants were pronounced dead. Their names were not immediately made public, but police say they are the driver, a 31-year-old man from West Haven; and his passenger, a 26-year-old man from New Haven.

The crash remains under investigation.
