Missing Rutgers Student Turns Up Unharmed

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) -- Rutgers University officials said a 17-year-old student who went missing Thursday has turned up unharmed.

E.J. Miranda, a school spokesman, said Shahan Akhter of South Brunswick approached a Rutgers police officer on the school's New Brunswick campus around 12:30 a.m. Sunday and asked for help.

Akhter was not injured but was taken to an area hospital for observation, Miranda said. He declined to disclose any specific details about Akhter's disappearance, citing his age and his family's request for privacy.

Akhter's parents had reported the commuter student missing after he failed to return home Thursday. His car was later found on campus, and family members expressed concern for his safety.
