RINGWOOD, N.J. (CBS 2) -- In New Jersey, the investigation continued Wednesday into a horrific crime, where a father allegedly murdered his two young children, and then turned the gun on himself. The surviving mother, was hospitalized for trauma after learning of the death of her family.

Police discovered the bodies at a home in Ringwood.

Investigators said 38-year-old Kurtis Birth pulled his children out of daycare and never returned home. His wife, Zoey Mendoza-Birth, called police and told them to check her in-law's former home.

There police  found the bodies of the children, Jada and Jordan Birth, both shot in the head. They found the father dead in parked car nearby with a rifle inside.

"It's heartbreaking, totally heartbreaking.  I don't know how I am going to tell my daughter because she plays with Jada all the time," said Caron Manning, a family friend.

"He seemed like a normal guy. Looked like they had the perfect life," said neighbor Tom Dorsett.

The couple was reportedly separating and Kurtis Birth had been seen removing items from the family home in Pompton Lakes.
