MEMPHIS, Tenn. (CBS/AP) — A Tennessee pilot who says he’s tired of being manhandled by security agents is waiting to see if he will lose his job because he refused a full body scan.

ExpressJet Airlines first officer Michael Roberts was chosen for the X-ray scan Friday at Memphis International Airport. The Houston-based pilot says he also refused a pat-down and went home.

The 35-year-old Roberts told The Commercial Appeal newspaper he wants to go to work and not be “harassed or molested without cause.”

Transportation Security Administration spokesman Jon Allen says a person was turned away after refusing to follow federal security procedures but declined to say if it was Roberts, citing privacy considerations.

Roberts says he has safety concerns, but called TSA a “make-work” program that doesn’t make travel safer.

“I just kind of had to ask myself ‘Where do I stand?’ I’m just not comfortable being physically manhandled by a federal security agent every time I go to work,” he told the Commercial Appeal.

Earlier this week, CBSNewYork reported that full-body scanners have not yet been installed at New York City area airports, despite plans that were in place to have them installed at Newark Liberty International, John F. Kennedy International, and LaGuardia airports by September.

The Transportation Security Administration told The Star-Ledger of Newark the installation is complex and the scanners would arrive “in the coming weeks.”

Passengers who prefer not to be scanned can choose to be patted down and pass through a metal detector.

TSA spokesman Ann Davis says passengers are no less safe. She says the scanners are designed to be faster and less physically intrusive than metal detectors and pat-downs.

The TSA has installed 259 scanners at 59 airports nationwide.

People who allow this to happen have given up their modesty, dignity and liberty. Saying “it’s no big deal” doesn’t make it so — that’s a rationalization for letting go of your rights so easily.

Aanyone who simply gripes about these body-scanners is just wasting electrons. Put your money into the jar: the Electronic Privacy Information Center, a respected organization long-involved in technology and privacy, is fighting the body-scanners.

Put in your $25; I just did.

You know what they say about opinions don’t you Nate?

Just because YOU think I have “given up my modesty, dignity, and liberty.” does not make it so.

More likely, I am just not as paranoid or conservative about the process as you are. I do not see it as a violation of my rights, but as a supplement to my security.

So, please refrain from speaking my mind as if you know what I think or presume I am giving up my rights because you see things differently. Otherwise, there are short sighted, closed mind, people out there that may think I have given up my right to freedom of speaking for myself. When I have an issue that concerns me, rest assured I make my point.

You must be a sheep or a naive little girl to say that giving up your rights don’t make it so. At the least your a fool or on a slippery slope to fascism . Maybe your a bureaucrat educated in the public school system . I don’t know who you are but I feel sorry for all of us because there are so many sheep in this country. Secure our borders and ports of entry. Use the FBI to find the Muslim extremist they let slip into our country. And do what John f Kennedy wanted to do ,Dump the CIA the federal reserve and Take this country back from the military industrial complex . Problem solved.

      • Yeziam

Jim, Welcome aboard, kinda late to the discussion, but that apparently goes hand in hand with your argument.

Yes, I am conservative and intolerant of ignorant people who have conspiracy theories like yours. You make me wonder if your arguments to dismantle portions of the USG might be a possible plot to enable your subversiveness.

Why else would you want to TRY to convince the proletariat to drop their defenses by dismantling what has kept them free. Is it because those organizations are keeping your group honest? Or so that you and your kind can swoop in and take over with YOUR extreme views, so YOU can become the ones to tell ME what to do.

Well, I can’t give you a big 10-4 on that one Good Buddy. I think I’ll stick with the freedoms I have, judging the plethora of pablum people put out to endorse their skewed thoughts on issues. THAT seems more pragmatic to me than wishing away my rights on someone who THINKS they know what’s better for ME.

TSA don’t pat down it’s a search there is a difference between pat down frisk. the are not cops and are not trained in the law. they shouldn’t be allowed to frisk.

  • Mikal

he should have the right to refuse this procedure, and we should have alternatives to the search without involving pat downs or naked body scanning.. Face it you freaks we don’t have to put up with this!!

  • Disgusted

While traveling with my family this past summer, we had the unfortunate experience of being told to go through the Full Body Scan. My husband and I refused. You should have seen the expressions on the faces of the TSA employees! They were shocked that we wouldn’t act like sheep. The one told the other that I could take our two kids through the metal detector while my husband got patted down. All was fine. We weren’t terrorists, but the interesting thing about the experience was that my daughter had a bag of sand in her carry-on that was never checked or even questioned! So much for catching explosives! The whole process is a joke! Baaah! Baaah! We’re all just a bunch of sheep to them.

I had my own awful experience with the TSA when I “opted out” of the Whole Body Imager (in Atlanta). I refuse to be strip-searched just so that I might enjoy state to state travel.
