Paterson Vetoes NY Autism Treatment Insurance Bill

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Gov. David Paterson has vetoed legislation that would require New York insurers to cover screening, diagnosis and lifetime treatment for autism spectrum disorders.

The bill would direct state health officials to identify treatment and therapy options that are evidence-based, peer-reviewed and clinically proven that insurers must cover.

Paterson estimates the state and municipal cost at $70 million annually, including higher health insurance premiums. He says Thursday he’ll sign the measure if legislators send the bill back with a designated source of funding.

Supporters say it would expand coverage for accepted approaches like routine toddler screening and speech and behavioral therapy. Opponents say it would give insurers standards to use in rejecting other treatments.

This bill was written by and for the insurance lobby. It was discriminatory and
removed the decision making from the doctors. It was going to shift costs onto all taxpayers. 95% of the autism community and autism organizations opposed this bill fiercely. Paterson is a hero for civil rights and the poster child for why we need term limits. We are better off with no bill than this bill that would harm families.

The article doesn’t explain enough of the necessary details to make an educated opinion, but I can tell that DanTe is an insenitive jerk.

Here’s hoping you marry something carrying the autism genes, Josh. Good luck with the kids, grandkids. Because there’s no “Truth in Genetics”, and these defects can sneak into your family tree, that’s been going strong for centuries (not yours Josh – slow in the head there), and hose it up royally.

You want the problem solved? Isolate the genetic defect and let it die off. Keep mixing the defect with the rest of the gene pool and you will always get a waste of resources.

  • DanTe

To all the commenters here: So WE should pay for YOUR genetic defects why? Let’s make a deal, I’ll pay for your sterilization. How’s that? Problem (autism) will be solve in a generation or two.

You are a complete idiot! Your mother should have been steralized before you were born!

Joe and Susan: As stated he will sign the bill once a source of funding is established. Did either of you bother to READ the ENTIRE article and not just the HEADLINE?

  • Joe

Apparently he cant see whats going on with these kids, Pay now or everbody will be paying later.

  • Susan

This is why he will not be a gov. for a second term. He is an embarrassment.
