MINEOLA, N.Y. (WCBS 880) – Nassau County lawmakers are taking steps to punish its red light runners.

The lawmakers are authorizing traffic enforcers to boot the vehicles of those who ignore red light camera summonses, WCBS 880’s Mike Xirinachs reports.

The county estimates 50,000 red light runners who ignore their summons so they have no choice to put in place what they call a necessary deterrent.

Drivers, however, starkly disagree.

“There is nothing inherently wrong with red light cameras as long as it’s not used just not as a safety device but just a money making operation,” one driver named Tom said. “It’s booting. That’s a little overkill.”
