Nassau County Officials Authorizing Car Bootings

MINEOLA, N.Y. (WCBS 880) – Nassau County lawmakers are taking steps to punish its red light runners.

The lawmakers are authorizing traffic enforcers to boot the vehicles of those who ignore red light camera summonses, WCBS 880’s Mike Xirinachs reports.

The county estimates 50,000 red light runners who ignore their summons so they have no choice to put in place what they call a necessary deterrent.

Drivers, however, starkly disagree.

“There is nothing inherently wrong with red light cameras as long as it’s not used just not as a safety device but just a money making operation,” one driver named Tom said. “It’s booting. That’s a little overkill.”

There are way to many RED-LIGHT RUNNERS that cause fatal accidents. Many places on LI rt347 are seriously dangerous intersections and its about time something is being done. It’s a rare occurance to see a suffolk cop pulling someone over….

  • Felicia

Finally!!! leadership is standing up to the naysayers and implementing action against the bad drivers

  • wordleaf

I’m glad to see the law going after people that blatantly disregard the law – regardless of whether you agree with the camera systems, it is the law of the land until otherwise repealed.

  • Tim

People need to pay their fines. They broke the laws and it’s only right that they do what they should do. It’s not fair to normal safe drivers, to allow others to get away without paying their tickets.

  • Ryan

Good for them. If someone can’t pay their ticket, then they should be a little bit more careful behind the wheel.

  • darla

Hopefully this will mkae people pay their tickets. Can’t go anywhere with a boot on your car now can ya? Pay your tickets people!!

  • Lynne

If someone has 4 or 5 unpaid traffic light violations I believe they should be booted! How else do you get their attention??!!! One unpaid violation could be the mail — or a kid hiding it from dad!

  • Kelly

What dos “boot” mean? That was poorly written when you use a term and don’t explain it.

    • Lynne

Kelly, a BOOT is a big metal lock placed n a tire so the car can not be driven.

  • TT

Its a money making operation. Shameless politicians allowing it to happen when the population is not supporting it.

    • Hally

Better than raising taxes! I say let the red light runners pay up, so safe drivers don’t have to!
