NEW YORK (WCBS 880) - The name of a New York City Council candidate might ring a bell, so to speak. But it's not because of politics, but a police shooting.

Nicole Paultre Bell certainly has name recognition in her southeast Queens neighborhood.

She is the woman behind the tragedy.

Her fiance, Sean Bell, was killed by police on what was to be their wedding day in 2006.

She says that might be why people there relate to her.

"You know, many of them understand what I've been through, because they've been through similar situations," Bell told WCBS 880 reporter Peter Haskell. "They're encouraged by my strength."

Bell says what she'd bring to the council is compassion and caring.
