Islanders Blog: It’s Getting Ugly Early

It’s getting ugly early.

Whenever I go out to a bar cruising for chicks I tend to go hard or go home. My policy is: If you’d rather play video games than take a girl home than you shouldn’t do it. My friend, on the other hand, doesn’t try to be so picky. His phrase is: “I’m going ugly early.”

For the Islanders, it’s getting ugly early after losing 5 straight with an embarrassing 7-2 loss on Wednesday. This is an incredible disappointment after the Islanders’ fast start getting 4 wins and 10 pts in their first 7 games.

That start wasn’t just surprising because so many people picked the Isles to stink this year, but it was surprising given all of their major injuries. However, after those 7 games, I thought maybe, just maybe, if this team could gain some confidence from all that early unexpected success, that they could really accomplish something this year.

Now, I’m not saying the season is over, but confidence has definitely swung in the opposite direction. To be honest, I don’t really know how to fix that confidence other than to just get a win already. I thought Wednesday would be the perfect chance for that, facing a weaker team like the Hurricanes that are having their own troubles. Instead it turned into a 7-2 blood bath. Complete with me yelling at the screen as Rick DiPietro did his usual over messing around with the puck outside of the net leading to that first Joe Corvo goal.

From a practical perspective, this losing streak is the combination of a small downturn made worse by key injuries. But something has to happen. They can recover from injuries, but not from a catastrophic lack of confidence, and that’s what they’re facing right now.

Till next time.
