LIPA Customers Could Get Small Break On Utility Bill

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Long Island Power Authority customers may have something to look forward to in January -- bills could drop by 2.2 percent.

The average LIPA bill is expected to fall about $3 thanks to an anticipated drop in natural gas prices, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

However, there is a catch -- you have to pay on time -- or else you will see a 1.5 percent late fee according to LIPA spokesperson Vanessa Baird Streeter.

"We are the only utility in New York state that does not charge late payment charges. And basically it's going to be very similar to the late payment charges that are assessed on your other bills," Baird Streeter told Hall.

Baird Streeter said the proposed fee would be charged if payments were between 23 to 25 days late.

The fee has been in place for commercial customers, but it is new for residential customers.

LIPA also said it was proposing a 1.9 percent increase on delivery charges, which the utility said were spurred by "increased costs including taxes and assessments."
