Sen. Tom Duane Among Those Arrested At AIDS Rally

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Hundreds of protesters gathered on the grounds of City Hall Park Tuesday morning at a rally to protest Gov. David Paterson's veto of the 30% rent cap for low-income people living with AIDS.

The bill, which was passed by both the NYS Senate and Assembly would have set 30% as the amount that low-income people living with AIDS would have to pay as their portion of rent for certain NYS subsidized AIDS housing programs. This would bring New York State in line with the Federal Standard, which is 30% .

Currently New York State takes 60-80% of income as rent for these programs, which leaves very little for food, clothing and utilities, according to the protesters.

While the crowd chanted "AIDS housing saves lives"about 20 of the protestors stopped traffic along Broadway and laid down on the pavement in an act of civil disobedience. Manhattan State Sen. Tom Duane, his chamber's first openly gay and openly HIV+ member, attended the rally and was one of the protesters who was arrested. Along with the other protesters present, Regina Quattrochi, CEO of Bailey House, which helps people with AIDS secure affordable housing, was arrested.

Paterson called nixing the legislation "his most difficult veto," according to a Daily News report.
