Home Care Aid Convicted Of Abusing Elderly Woman

NEW YORK (CBS 2) — Surveillance video helps convict a home health aide accused of abusing an elderly woman in Brooklyn.

Elizabeth Peters, 53, was found guilty of brutalizing an 86-year-old woman in her care.

Surveillance video shows the victim who suffers from dementia and Alzheimer’s flailing helplessly on the floor for more than an hour while the caregiver watched TV.

Prosecutors said Peters then dragged the woman by her ankles. “After that she grabbed her two more times by her arm, she subjected her to a risk, an unacceptable risk,” said David Kim, Brooklyn Assistant DA.

The victim is now being cared for in a nursing home.

Peters faces up to a year in prison when she’s sentenced in January.

I wish only the worse for that homecare worker. May she rot in hell.

oh my God.. my mom and dad are being taken care of at home by what I call my angels.. I do like the group home concept I wish I knew more about that.. when mom was in a nursing home for 14 months it was one CNA to 15 patients and I saw patients who just wanted to go to bed but had to wait for “their” CNA to become available .. a nursing home is only as good as the amount of effort family caregivers are willing to devote to their loved ones that are there. I was there almost every day and had very few issues aside from the shortage of staff.

I believe this goes on a lot more than we know. Group homes or nursing homes with layers of staff is a safer way for families to go.

One year sentence is not enough. I strongly feel that at that age with the medical complications this patient is like a baby defenseless. so the punishment for abusing children is more severe. her charges should be life threatening abuse, neglect, mental even if she doesn’t remember. Never never never let her work as a care giver again , no hospitals, no daycare or nursing homes….
