WCBS 880's Deborah Rodriguez reports

Back in the 1990s, mezzo-soprano Deb Every was debuting at the Royal Opera in Stockholm, Sweden and had to leave her husband and two-year-old back home in the states. She was beside herself when Thanksgiving rolled around. So, she decided to make a holiday dinner - apple pie included.

"I brought all the things home and I made the apple pie and I tasted it and I have to say, it was one of the worst pies I've ever had in my entire life," Every told WCBS 880's Deborah Rodriguez. "It was horrible."

Every didn't stop trying. She baked and baked until one day, retired from opera and the brokerage business, the pies had gotten good enough to sell to a local farmstand in the Hudson Valley.

Eventually, she went on to open the Me-Oh-My Pie Shop and Café in Red Hook.

"Of course, we have apple and pumpkin and pecan and we're gonna be putting out a chocolate pecan pie which is gonna be our newest favorite," says Every.

Now, doing a booming business on South Broadway in Red Hook, Deb hasn't forgotten her operatic roots.

She says, "Every once in a while, when I'm in the shop and I'm all by myself, I do sing, but I don't let anybody else hear me sing. I mean, my G-d, there's nothing worse than an old opera singer who doesn't stop singing."

The Me-Oh-My Pie Shop and Café is located at 7466 South Broadway, Red Hook, NY 12571. Hours are 10-6 Wednesday - Saturday and 10-3 on Sunday.
