Suffolk County police said they responded to the fire on Spur Drive North in North Bay Shore at 8:30 p.m. Monday.

Firefighters found Luis Zayas and Angela Alvarez unconscious in a ground floor bathroom. They were taken to a hospital where Zayas was pronounced dead.

Alvarez was listed in critical condition suffering from smoke inhalation and burns. The children's mother, Zulma Zayas, escaped uninjured through a bedroom window.

With all the appearances of a single family home, police said the residence was a multi-family death trap, CBS 2's Derricke Dennis reported.

The house was divided up into three apartments with multiple locks on several doors and a wall inside the garage turning it into a bedroom. That scenario turned into a nightmare for firefighters as they were unable to know exactly where to search or how many people to look for.

"There was a problem entering through the garage and through the door. The garage was converted into an apartment," Brentwood Fire Department Chief Eric Raudies said.

Property records in the Town of Islip listed the residence as a single family home.

Fire investigators said the blaze started in the back of the home and believed it may have been sparked by a lamp or some other light source left lying on a couch.
