UNCASVILLE, Conn. (CBS 2/AP) — The fugitive who escaped police custody in New Jersey Wednesday was being held Thursday in a Connecticut state police jail cell.

Jose Rodriguez was captured by U.S. marshals around 3 a.m. in a motel in Uncasville.

Federal, state and local law enforcement officers were involved in the search for the 26-year-old from the Bronx.

Rodriguez was originally taken into custody to be questioned about an assault in a Fort Lee hotel but managed to escape, prompting an all out manhunt and several school lockdowns, including a 25-minute one at Fort Lee Elementary School No. 2 Wednesday afternoon.

The lockdown ended at 2:40 p.m. School officials said they made the move as a precaution.

The NYPD said officers arrested Rodriguez earlier Wednesday in Fort Lee. He was handcuffed and shackled and placed in an unmarked police vehicle, but he somehow managed to drive off, apparently using his knees to steer.

The abandoned car was later located in Ridgefield.
