Canned Food Drive Kicks Off
NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – When seventh grader Felton Cavenes helped his I.S. 141 in Astoria, Queens set a record in collecting 29,000 cans in the City Harvest and Daily News annual canned food drive, he learned a very good lesson.
"It helped me really understand why I'm doing this," Cavenes said.

Now, his school is at it again. The 28th annual canned food drive kicked off this week and Cavenes knows the value in donating. The drive's full name is the Daily News Readers Care to Feed the Hungry Canned Food Drive.
"In a minute you can become one of those less fortunate. So you really want to give back. You really want to help someone in need," he said.
City Harvest's goal is to collect one million pounds of food this year, WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reports.
For Jilly Stephens of City Harvest, it's a chance to help out the many people that the recession impacted.
"While we hear reports that the recession is over, for many of our neighbors it is clearly not over yet," Stephens said.
Canned and non perishable foods can be brought to any city, fire or police station or Modell's Sporting Good locations throughout the fire boroughs through Jan. 7.
While it's only the beginning, Cavenes looks for to the reward he earned last year.
"And the reward was us knowing that we did something. We helped the less fortunate," he said.
