Cops: NY Man Killed Self As We Tried To Disarm Him

YONKERS, N.Y. (AP) -- Police say a man fatally slashed himself in the neck as officers tried to get his knife away from him in a dark stairwell in a suburban New York apartment building.

Yonkers police went to the Yonkers Avenue building Thursday morning to respond to a report that the 29-year-old man had cut himself. He was staying with relatives in the building.

Police say officers found the man barricaded in the stairway with a knife, and they fired a stun gun and a beanbag projectile in an unsuccessful attempt to disarm him. They say he apparently took the knife to his neck before officers could subdue him.

He was pronounced dead at a hospital. Police haven't released his name.
