WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau reports

City councilor Kenneth Cockayne says Mayor Art Ward was taken to the hospital on Saturday night when he choked while having dinner at the Italian Social Club during a UConn football watch party.

Cockayne, who's the acting mayor, says firefighters gave him the 63-year-old Ward the Heimlich maneuver but were not able to dislodge the food and the mayor lost consciousness.

Ward is a Democrat and Vietnam War veteran in his second term as mayor of the city of 60,000.

He remains hospitalized in a coma. His prognosis is unclear.
