US Education Chief Meets NYC's Future Chancellor

NEW YORK (AP) -- U.S. Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan has met with incoming New York City schools Chancellor Cathie Black and says he will do everything he can to support her.

A spokeswoman for the city Department of Education said Black and Duncan met Thursday and discussed a number of education issues, including the City's plan to implement the State's winning "Race to the Top" school reform proposal.

Earlier, Duncan said he was sure Black would do a great job leading the nation's largest school system.

Duncan was in New York for an announcement about an initiative to beef up GED programs.

Duncan led Chicago's public school system before President Obama chose him for the Cabinet post.

Black will take over for Chancellor Joel Klein next month.
