Community Mourns For Victim Of Deadly Carjacking Accident

EAST ORANGE, N.J. (CBS 2) -- A New Jersey community is mourning the loss of a beloved church member killed in a deadly carjacking.

Police say Jamal Silvera carjacked a vehicle from a municipal garage in West Orange.

Investigators say he then led officers on a pursuit through East Orange on Friday, striking James Callaway and plowing into another vehicle.

Callaway, a member of St. Mark's AME Church, was leaving the church and was about to get in his car when he was hit.

Members of the church and friends of Callaway are at a loss.

"It's senseless. It's not worth losing a life or anyone else's in the process of a crime," Darrel Hall said.

The suspect ran off but was later caught by police. He's being held on $1 million bail.
