N.J. Carjacking Suspect Heads To Court Wednesday

NEWARK, N.J. (CBS 2) — A carjacking suspect accused of killing a church trustee is due in Essex County court Wednesday.

Jamal Silvera, 21, was accused of stealing a municipal vehicle from the Lakeside Street Municipal Garage in West Orange last Friday.

Officers spotted the Ford Explorer and followed it into East Orange.

Prosecutors said Silvera struck 63-year-old James Callaway as he was leaving St. Mark’s AME Church and headed to his car.

Members of the church and friends of Callaway were at a loss. “It’s senseless. It’s not worth losing a life or anyone else’s in the process of a crime,” Darrel Hall said.

Silvera was charged with murder and was being held on $1 million bail.

  1. Judgement day will arrive says:

OK Js..FESS’ UP…YOU SEEM TO CONDONE HIS MALICIOUS ACTIONS, IS HE YOUR BABY DADDY ?…YOUR PARTNER IN CRIME ??…YOUR SORRY-ASS BROTHER ??
SOMEONE MUST PAY ??? JAMAL WILL PAY.
HE WILL NEVER SEE THE DAY OF LIGHT AGAIN, if we’re lucky someone will kill his ass behind bars.

    1. Js says:

Im not condoning anything he did.He was wrong. And the news got half the story messed up. He isnt the only one at fault either. Police Arent supposed to chase stolen cars anyway for this very reason. I know they were doing their jobs but they were wrong too.

      1. Empty Space says:

It’s a waste of time trying to get something through to you, Js…You are just as young and dumb as he is.
Had it not been for this moron STEALING a vehicle the police would have no cause to chase this moron. What part don’t you understand ?
The space between your two ears is apparently empty.
Enjoy going to visit jamal !

  2. Js says:

Like i said before jamal didnt mean to hurt anyone. You act like he went out with the intention to kill someone, it was an accident. God only knows why this happened so he”s the only one that can judge not you.

    1. You are in the same cell says:

      Js
it doesn’t sound as though this person is judging him. They are speaking the actual fact of what has taken place, the facts.
If someone thug/punk mowed down your mother/father would you be sp sympathic, I think not.
Obviously you know this punk well and you know what they say, guilty by association. You will soon do similar to what your thug friend did, thug

      1. Js says:

Actually you guys are being judgemental. You dont know him from a hole in the wall but you are calling him a thug and all that unnecessary stuff. And not everything you hear is true. I know someone lost their life, my condolences to the family, and someone needs to pay but i dont think he deserves to spend the next 25 years in jail.

  3. Teach him right..NOW says:

Hopefully the court system will hand down a sentence fit for this criminal in the making. According to a friend of his..Js..he claims this punk never meant to hurt anyone. Yet he stole a vehicle they did not belong to him, drove through the streets violently and ran down a man that did him no wrong.
Put his ass in a cell with BUBBA, let BUBBA teach him what his parents obviously did not. How to treat people and their property with respect and not take what does not belong to him.
