WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau reports

As the 53rd of 53 Democratic Senators, Blumenthal has a tiny office in the Dirksen Senate Office Building.

So far, he has spent much of his time at the Capitol getting to know his new colleagues.

"Those relationships will really determine, in large part, how much I can get done, reaching across the aisle," Blumenthal told WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau.

That will be critical, Blumenthal says, to forging legislation.

As for his digs, Blumenthal says he has a small apartment in the capital city, but expects to spend at least three days in Connecticut each week keeping his ear to the ground.

Blumenthal, currently Connecticut's Attorney General, takes over for the retiring Sen. Chris Dodd. Both are Democrats.

Blumenthal defeated former WWE executive Linda McMahon in the November election.
