As folks descended on shopping areas like Herald Square, they had to meet the requirements needed: sharp elbows and patience, WCBS 880's Monica Miller reports.

When asked what it was like to shop on Friday, Carlos Santiago from the Bronx just had one word.

"Horrible," he said.

Shaynell Aroyo said she's found great bargains on presents like body lotion and perfume, although she didn't want to wait until the last minute to complete her shopping.

"We're in an economic crisis. We're broke so we had to wait until payday," Aroyo said.

Some shoppers, like Claudette Bryant, called it an all-day affair.

"I started out at five in the morning, and I'm still going, and then I'll transfer into Santa's outfit," she said.
