NEW YORK (WCBS 880) - 1,150 newly minted New York City police officers were set to graduate today and will be working Times Square on New Year’s Eve.

WCBS 880’s Rich Lamb reports

Police commissioner Ray Kelly spoke about whether another crop of new cops will be happening anytime soon.

“Obviously, these are difficult budget times and we are scheduled now to hire a class in April – April 1st,” Kelly told WCBS 880 reporter Rich Lamb. “Whether or not that hiring takes place is still very much up in the air.”

The department now has 34,900 officers there were 41,000 cops in the NYPD ten years ago.
