Heating Assistance Org. Struggles To Meet Need

HARTFORD, CT (WCBS 880) – This year, the number of people here in Connecticut who must choose between paying rent, buying food, or paying for home heating oil is growing.

WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau reports

Operation Fuel is a charitable organization they might turn to, but, says director Pat Rice, the organization is struggling to meet the demand.

Rising fuel costs are spreading the dollars thin.

Rice is making a broad appeal for donations.

“The weather does, you know, have people realize, ‘Oh my goodness! What would it be like if I had to sit and have no heat in my home?’.”

It’s easy enough to donate.

Connecticut residents need only check off the ‘add a dollar program’ on their utility bill, or contribute directly to the Operation Fuel website.

I have seen some of these folks begging for free heat. They have the thermostat turned up to 80. But the “deserve” to be warm.

Perhaps if you’re faced with this situation, it might be time to sell your home and contemplate renting instead. It’s obvious you cannot afford basic necessities and waiting for free handouts to heat your home is irresponsible.
