L.I. Man Accused Of Impersonating Cop During Traffic Stop

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police in Suffolk County arrested a man they said impersonated a police officer during a traffic stop on Friday.

Authorities said 28-year-old Christopher Maier, of Sayville, was pulled over as part of a traffic stop in Islip Terrace Friday afternoon.

During the stop at Lowell and Greenlawn avenues, Maier identified himself as a police officer from the Village of Saltaire. He also displayed a Lieutenant's badge, according to police. Upon further investigation, authorities realized Maier was not an officer.

Maier was to be arraigned Saturday at First District Court. He has been charged with criminal impersonation, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, criminal possession of a controlled substance among other charges.

Police are asking anyone who may have encountered Maier impersonating an officer to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
