Ex-NY Manager Dallas Green Gives Thanks For Support
NEW YORK (AP) — Former major league manager Dallas Green thanked his extended baseball family for their support on the shooting death of his granddaughter and five others in Tucson, Ariz.
Nine-year-old Christina Taylor Green was killed Saturday outside a supermarket where a neighbor had taken her to meet Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was critically wounded.
Christina's dad, John, is a scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He and his wife, Roxanna, have a son named Dallas.
Grandfather Dallas Green managed the Philadelphia Phillies to their first World Series championship in 1980. He also managed the New York Yankees and New York Mets, was general manager of the Chicago Cubs and pitched in the majors. He currently is an executive adviser with the Phillies.
Green and his wife, Sylvia, issued a statement.
"This is such a tough time for Sylvia and I and for John and Roxanna and little Dallas. We thank everybody from the bottom of our hearts for their friendship, thoughts and prayers, especially the Phillies and our extended family in baseball," Green said.
"Somehow we will get through this, but right now our little nine-year-old granddaughter is not here and we're having a hard time with that," he said.
