L.I. Road Signs Being Checked After Wrong-Way Driving

MINEOLA, NY (AP / WCBS 880) – New York transportation officials will inspect all 450 entrance and exit ramps on Long Island following a wave of wrong-way drunken driving arrests.

WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall reports

They will be making sure that “wrong way” signs, reflective pavement arrows and other safety devices are in place.

At least 16 people have been arrested on wrong-way DWI charges since November. In one case, an off-duty New York City police officer was killed by an alleged drunk driver going the wrong direction on the Northern State Parkway.

Last week, Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice proposed legislation that would make wrong-way driving a specific traffic offense.

  1. The Good Samaritan says:

Auto makers have to install electronic GPS like devices in all new cars that would immobilize any car going the wrong way. Except for emergency vechicles.

    The Good Samaritan has spoken.

  2. Jim Ross says:

I travel to work starting at 330am and get to work by 4am,. 6 days a week for the last 25 years.Traveling on parkways I would see a driver going the wrong way 1 to 2 times a year, that was over 15 years ago. The last 5 years or so, im scared to get on the parkways at that time in the morning especially on the weekend. Its gotten so bad I see at least two drivers going the wrong way each month now. I now take the side roads to work on the weekends. I’m just surprised I dont see bad headlines the next day.

Drunk drivers should get manditory jail time like the gun law in NYC.

  4. Cap'n Howdy says:

Why not post snipers at each ramp: take ’em out before they can Schuler someone.

      I second that.

Sterilize the rest of the stinking spawn members too. Stop the infestation on the gene pool.
